Instincts Reborn

Lara croft has been a quintessential character for the adventure and action platform of the gaming industry since it's inception. With the crossbreeding of the film industry with the gaming industry the image of Lara was diluted and changed for the new audience. Although interesting and compelling to the average consumer, the character became more estranged to the gaming community and more of an icon for the film industry. With the recent announcement of Lara's return home in the gaming world I was very excited to be challenged as an artist to understand what drives, and defines the character. After watching the gameplay demos and creator's commentary it became clear that the narrative would push Lara's survivalist prowess into the fray by dropping her into an isolated environment where she only had her wits to rely on. I thought the best way to combine these disparate elements of isolation and her extreme conditioning would be to show that underneath her beauty and physicality was a very pragmatic, methodical, and ferocious set of talents; that at her core she was a survivor. I used an uncountable amount of patterns to build up her flesh which each tell separate fragments of what Lara is and what she will become. The piece was a ton of fun and I'm glad the community has been so involved in the project as well as the game's creators bringing this opportunity to deviantart. I wish everyone the best of luck in their entries but more than anything, I'm very proud to be a part of the well of efforts by each artist in deviantart competing to provide a rebirth for Lara Croft.
